Garda Crime Prevention Tips

I hope that you are enjoying the summer – sunshine, clouds and rain.blanchardstown-garda-station

I am sure that you will have noticed the roads are quieter as many of our neighbours are on holidays.     Let’s make sure that they come home to a safe and secure house by keeping a close eye on suspicious vehicles, tradespeople, collectors and listening out for alarms.

Bogus trades are a particular concern this time of year as they use their presence to identify houses that are empty. If you see bins left out after they have been collected, kindly bring  them back in to avoid advertising that a house is empty.

If you are going on holidays – leave a key with a trusted neighbour or friend and let other neighbours know who has this in case of emergency.   Travel safe and be prepared to do the same for your neighbours on your return.

We had a good turnout for the talk from Sgt. Vincent Connolly last month.     Thanks to Liam and Carmel and all for holding the fort while I was travelling and to Shivaun for taking notes to share with you all.

Some notes and suggestions below from the talk.   Of course we do not want to live in a fortress take sensible suggestions from below that suit your needs.

  • Most burglaries are opportunistic – open cars, bicycles left unlocked, doors and windows left open (particularly in the hot weather) – use of tools from your shed if unlocked to assist break-in.    Sounds obvious but try not to be an easy target in this regard.

  • A good way to assess the security of your house is to look at your house from the road and consider – if I was locked out, how would I break in to my house?    Have I left bins or chairs to enable someone to hop over my side gate?     Have I left tools accessible in my shed that could be used to force a window or door?

  • Do trees and shrubs provide natural shelter for would be burglars while they attempt to break in?   Keeping these pruned may allow your neighbours and passers by better visibility of what is happening outside the front of your house.   Or consider defensive planting – holly or something prickly if you have potential access from a rear or the side.

  • Consider bringing your side gate forward in line with the front of your house to remove another blind spot.    An arched side gate is more difficult to climb.

  • Keep your keys safe at night.   Do not store near windows and doors.     Consider fitting a deflector on letterbox or consider a sealed letterbox from An Post.

  • External lights at night – make your home less attractive – consider LED lights – dusk till dawn.    LIDL and ALDI often have ‘fake TVs’ that simulate TV flickering in rooms for when you are away.      Use your alarm.

  • Beware of distraction burglaries or bogus trades
    • Distraction burglaries – can I use your phone? can I get a glass of water?  Can I ring an ambulance?     Do not let a stranger into your house.
    • Bogus trades – also an excuse to access your house.     Special pricing offers, doing a job for your neighbour.   Very often charge excessive rates and have been known to bring people to ATM to get cash out.   Only use trades that are known to you.
    • Bogus collectors – another reason to access houses and check for empty houses.    Also very many are for profit rather than for charity.

  • When going on holiday:
    • Tidy the garden and mow lawns
    • Do not leave bins out
    • Leave keys with friends
    • Inform neighbours
    • Cancel deliveries
    • Manage post
    • Lights on timer
    • Do not advertise by posting on social media that you will be away.

  • If you come across a burglar – do not engage.    Phone 999 or 112 and alert the Gardaí.   Get yourself to safety and inform a neighbour.

  • A fire plan is as important as a security plan.   Make sure that you can get easily out even when your home is locked.    Test and maintain alarms and plan your escape route.

  • Do not keep cash in the home.    If you have valuables, take photos of jewellery and keep a list of valuables.      Consider marking property with your Eircode using a UV pen.

  • In summary:
    • Secure all windows and doors
    • Use alarm
    • Light up
    • Store keys safely
    • Record details of valuables and don’t keep lots of cash

Thanks to Sgt Connolly and Garda Alex McDermott for their time and thank you for your continued support.

We would love to get your inputs and suggestions on how we can improve the neighbourhood watch group and we may ask for some more specific inputs between now and the AGM.

We have a great group of volunteers that support the group as street coordinators and as part of the social committee.    We would always welcome additional volunteers so if you are interested in getting involved just let us know.

More bogus trader alerts:

The Irish independent carried a story during the week of a person who was convicted of conning an elderly woman of over €2,000 for roofing work that he said was needed on her home.   This is typical of what we have mentioned in the past and is worth a read by clicking here.

Closer to home we have recived reports from Roselawn last week where two men travelling with a white van and using a ladder to access houses  were challenged and claimed to be working for Virgin media.     Gardai were called but the men disappeared immediately afterwards. Reminder to all that we have a list of recommended trades people now available on www.pinedhadeleigh.com.

Well, we asked for a sign…

It took 11 months from our AGM – two lost applications via a process within An Garda Síochana and Fingal but it finally looks like we are getting our Neighbourhood watch Text Alert signs.

Thanks to all for your patience.Signs

End of January Update

A belated Happy New Year to you allPhoenix-Park2

Recent Burglaries:

As you will have seen from recent text alerts it was a busy start to the year with burglaries in Deerpark, Park Avenue and surrounding areas.   We have been lucky to have missed out to date on this latest wave but it is a reminder that criminals remain active in the area and that we need to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.

We are exploring some collaboration with our adjacent neighbourhood watch areas to alert each other of incidents in the broader area and over time there may be other initiatives that we can approach jointly.

While text alerts are useful in getting information out it is important to remember that we still live in what most would consider a very safe neighbourhood.      Security is important but so is getting on with our lives.

Oh Christmas Tree! Oh Christmas Tree!

We have come through another Christmas season and despite some improved signage on the green on Auburn Avenue from Fingal we once again faced a constant flow of Christmas trees illegally dumped on the green.     The dumping appeared later than in previous years but once one or two trees appeared, more followed. While our priority will be on burglary and more serious crimes, this is something that we will continue to try to address in cooperation with Fingal and the authorities.

This dumping is illegal and persons caught doing so can be prosecuted.     I expect that much of this is from persons outside our area and we may consider further improvements to signage in future years and potentially a mechanism to report those that are dumping which can be reported in an efficient way to the appropriate authorities.

We may never fully solve this problem (you can bring a horse to water but you cannot make it drink) but we will continue to make it more clear that these actions are illegal and we will help the authorities with enforcement.

Neighbourhood Watch Signage:

The saga of our Neighbourhood Watch signage continues to be a frustration.    We are now on our third application through the Gardaí and Fingal – this first two applications having been lost in their process.

The signs are printed and ready – we just need the official all clear.   As soon as we get the approval the signs will be erected.

Ideas and Volunteers for 2017:

As it is the start of a new year we will start to make our plans for the Neighbourhood Watch.     We are alsways open to ideas and suggestions on how we can improve the Neighbourhood Watch so please do not hesitate to share your thoughts on how we can improve security and the sense of community in the area.

We will plan to have our AGM in April and we will share with you further plans and updates and a report on our finances in advance of that meeting.

If anyone is interested in becoming more involved with the Neighbourhood watch this year let me know.    We have a great team of volunteers but additional help is always welcome.

Seasonal Swing and Trusted Trades

With the winter upon us it is time to test the mettle of our fair weather golfers.

As you gold golf ball sant hat on a white background 3d Illustrationsmay know we were not blessed with sunshine for our golf outing in September and Castleknock Golf Club kindly offered to give us an extra 9 holes later in the year.

As a result we will have a casual ‘seasonal swing’ 9 hole outing for those that can make it on Thursday 1st December at Castleknock Golf Club. We have a number of tee off times from 12.30pm and the format will be a straightforward stableford singles.

The golf itself will be free but we will gather €5 per person to put towards some small prizes which will be distributed after the game in the clubhouse.

If you are interested in playing please drop me a note, or contact Liam Delaney and we will include you.   Thanks to Liam for organizing this.

On a separate note we have had a very good response to our requests for tradesperson recommendations and there is now a new tab available on the Pines Hadleigh website which lists the recommendations to date.

We still advise people to make their own judgement on the people that they engage and no we cannot guarantee their work but we believe that it is a good starting point for neighbours when looking for a tradesperson in the area.

We are open to more recommendations so if you have updates to the list (positive and negative) please drop me a note to lorcan@pineshadleigh.com.

Thankfully we have had little to report on crime in our area but there have been some thefts (car and some bicycles) in neighbouring Beechpark so continued vigalence is important.     In particular I would ask you to be aware of neighbours’ burglar alarms and take a minute to check them out if they go off.

As always – keep a look out – especially at this time of year – and report anything suspicious to the Gardaí on 01 6667000.

Lock up Light up

An Garda Siochana (‘AGS’) released some Locked houseupdated crime statistics to reflect the impact of Operation Thor which was launched to tackle domestic burglaries which was launched on 2nd November 2015.   Since then domestic burglaries have fallen nationally by approximately 30%.

However as we approach the winter months we need to be vigilant as traditionally burglaries rise in winter time.

Some selected stats from AGS.

  •   In winter, residential burglaries increase by 23%.
  • Over 45% of residential burglaries in winter occur between 5pm and 11pm – dark evenings present  opportunity.
  • In almost 1 in 5 burglaries, entry is through an unsecured door or window – plese lock up.
  • Jewellery and cash are the most common objects stolen during burglaries.
  • Front door, rear door and rear windows account for 79% of access routes for burglars.
  • There were over 160 cases where car keys were “fished” through the letterbox in the past year.  Most of these in Dublin area and almost all of these preventable by storing your keys away from letterboxes.
  • More incidents reported by an alarm activation were detected than not detected.

Whether you are at home or going out:

  • remember to turn on some lights, use timer switches,
  • lock all doors and windows,
  • use your alarm, and
  • store keys away from windows and letter boxes.
  • keep an eye out for suspicious activity in your area and report anything suspicious to the Gardaí on 01 6667000.

                                                              Lock Up and  Light Up.

Bogus Trades and Collections

This week I attened a meeting with the community policing unit and some of the other local Neighbourhood watch associations.     The news on crime levels in the area is positive with a reduction in the last number of months over prior years and with a number of recent arrests in the area for burglary.    That said, there wasblanchardstown-garda-station a noticable spike in burglaries in September as the evenings get darker and we are reminded to be vigilant.

There were three areas that we were reminded of in particular during the meeting that continue to provide opportunities to burglars:

  • Lights
  • Trades
  • Collections

Lights:

It is dark earlier these evenings which means that it is frequently dark when we return from work, walks  or other outlings.    Houses in darkness provide an excellent clue to burglars that they are empty and they will not be disturbed.    Consider using timer switches to have lights come on before it gets dark.

Bogus Tradespeople:

We are familiar with the calls to our doors offering to do gutters, gardens, paintinig and other jobs.   The simple rule here should be – do not engage with tradespeople that you do not know or have not been directly recommended by a neighbour.

It opens people up to a direct risk of burglary, provides legitimate access to bogus trades to our area to check out houses and there is an additional risk of them extorting fees from vulnerable people in our community for unnecessary work.

The Gardai mentioned that multiple houses in one street in Roselawn were recently subjected to the latter in recent weeks.

Age Action Ireland have set up a scheme called Care and Repair which provides vetted tradespersons to do small jobs for persons over 65 years of age.    This can be accessed locally through the Blanchardstown Area Partnership on 01 8066639.

We will add this to a local list of contacts on our website.

A number of other schemes have also put together a list of local tradespeople that have been recommended by neighbours and published them on their website.      We are very open to doing this and would ask you to let us know if there are local tradespeople or businesses that:

·        that you have personally used,

·        that you would be willing to recommend to a neighbour and

  • that you believe to be set up in a professional manner with appropriate insurance and qualifications

We are particularly interested in maintenance, plumbers, electricians, painters and decorators, carpenters, gardening services and we will compile a list based on the feedback that we receive and make it available on the website.      For this reason it might be good to check with the tradesperson to make sure that they are fine with this.

We will still advise people to make their own judgement but it should be a better starting place than answering the door to a stranger offering services.

Bogus Collections:

We are used to receiving notes through the door for charity clothing collections.     The Gardaí have advised that many of these collections are being carried out by bogus collectors that sell the clothes for profit.  They may also use the collections as an excuse to scout areas for other activities.

Of course there are a number of genuine collections that also occur.

The advice is to support recognised charities only and to be particularly suspicious of flyers that include no contact details or just a mobile number for contact.

In the case of bogus collectors and suspicious tradespeople their advise is not to engage with them but to report details to the Revenue who have a team focused on investigating shadow economy activity.   Details are available on http://www.revenue.ie/en/business/shadow-economy/reporting.html

Other updates:

  • Our neighbourhood watch signage has arrived and is currently awaiting some paperwork from the community policing to be sent to Fingal County Council.   We hope to have this resolved shortly.
  • We had 10 homes take the locksmith security assessment in recent weeks.   The feedback we have received to date from this process was positive.

  • Fingal have said that they are due to trim some branches of trees on Auburn Avenue in the coming weeks to improve the quality of lighting in the area.

As always – keep a look out – especially at this time of year – and report anything suspicious to the Gardaí on 01 666700.
