Neighbours Night 2016

Apart from the weather, Neighbours Night 2016 turned out to be a great success.

We had around 70 neighbours and friends for a lovely meal at the Vue Restaurant at Castleknock.   There was pleny of chat, music food and drink and the evening was hosted by our own masterful master of ceremonies – Liam Delaney.

Awards for bravery (there could be other words for it) go to the 30 golfers that braved wind, rain and low flying seagulls in the afternoon scramble.     Cogratulations to team of Liam Delaney, Henry Jones, Ivan O’Callaghan & Marie O’Reilly who took the top prize on the day.

There were plenty of spot prizes on the night and we even enjoyed a rendition of Joxer goes to Stuttgart.

There are several groups to thank for their contribution to the success of the day.

  • Our social team: Liam Delaney, Michael Matson, Cathal O’Reilly, Carmel Grogan, John Murphy and Noel O’Reilly.
  • Our street coordinators: Liam Delaney, John Murphy, Carmel Grogan, Ruth Hogan, Charlie O’Connor, John Nolan, Paddy O’Reilly, Tom Kennington, Peter Blessing, Freda Gallagher and Dan O’Shea.
  • Our sponsors:   We really appreciate the local businesses and individuals that contributed to the prizes for the day.    They have embraced the community spirit and we look forward to supporting them in return in the coming months.  The businesses that contributed included:
    • Castleknock Golf Club
    • Chapelizod Pharmacy
    • D15 Locksmiths
    • De Brúns
    • Dominos Pizza
    • Irish Distillers
    • Lacey Locksmiths
    • Lloyds Pharmacy
    • PerformanSC Supply Chain
    • So Belle Castleknock
    • Silver Spoon Cafe
    • Spar Castleknock
    • Supervalu Blanchardstown
    • Martin Uzell
    • Liam Delaney
    • John McCarthy
    • Carmel Grogan
  • Castleknock Golf Club and the Vue Restaurant: for providing a wonderful venue, entertainment and service.    Many people commented on the quality of the food and value provided.    They have also offered to host a 9 hole event for us later in the year as the golf was cut short on this occasion due to the weather.
  • Our Neighbours and Friends: for embracing the occasion and contributing to the positive spirit on the night.   Thanks also to the many neighbours who could not join on the night but sent messages of support and indeed watched over the neighbourhood.

It is great to have a good news story to share among the news of security and crime.    We will be reviewing the event again in the coming weeks so if you have suggestions on how to improve for the future we would welcome your inputs.

Finally – if you have photos to share from the event send them through and we will share on the website and on facebook.

Pines Hadleigh Golf and Social

Castleknock Golf ClubWe are excited to be having our second annual golf outing and ‘Neighbours’ Night’.

Not that we need an excuse, but it is a great opportunity to get together with our closest neighbours, finally meet those neighbours you wave to in the morning, welcome those that are new to the area and perhaps welcome back some that have moved on.

We have moved the venue this year to Castleknock Golf Club which is a beautiful venue for the golf and has an excellent reputation for the food in its Vue restaurant.   Guests are very welcome so feel free to reach out to those that might enjoy the day.

For the golfers (the serious ones and the social ones):

·        18 hole scramble with tee times from 1.30pm to 3.10pm

·        If you have time preferences or partner preferences let us know

  • Cost for the golf and three course meal is expected to be around €45 – €50 per person

For all – starting at 8.00PM:

  • Three course meal – choice of main course, dessert and tea / coffee
  • Music and the occasional spot prize
  • Cost is expected to be in the region of €15 – €20 per person

What we need from you:

  • Don’t wait for some one else – be the one on your road to suggest to your neighbours that you go as a group on the night.
  • Getting an early idea on numbers for the golf and the food will help us to plan and finalize the costs with the venue.      Please let us know as soon as you can (you can always cancel later).
    • If you are joining for golf – who will play, home club and handicap (if you have one) and include guests if applicable.
    • If you are joining for the meal
    • No money required up front – we will take money from folks on the day
  • The intent is to run this as a break even on the night – it is not a fundraiser and we will not be dipping into the neighbourhood watch funds.  If we are left with additional funds on the night we may donate to a local charity.
  • There are generally plenty of taxis available so let’s also plan to get everyone home safely.
  • Enjoy – the day is meant to be informal and social for all the neighbours.

Sponsors:

  • Although it is not the focus of the event, we had some very generous sponsors for golf and spot prizes last year.
  • If any business is interested in contributing something this year please contact one of the street coordinators or Cathal O’Reilly, Noel O’Reilly or Michael Matson who have been drafted in to support the event.

You should get a mail / text / note with the details and the date or drop me a note if you need a reminder.

Thanks to the social team for helping put this together and thank you all for your continued support.

Let’s make it a happy return from holidays!

Holiday time is here for many of us (at least bstick_figures_sitting_on_the_beach_with_a_table_400_clr_8153 (1)etween the showers).   With even the best holidays it is always good to come home and it is always a relief to open the front door to a house that is safe.    While we cannot control the weather, we can all take some sensible steps to keep safe over the coming months.

For those heading off:

  • Inform close neighbours that you will be away and let them know who they can call if your alarm is activated.
  • Have a friend or neighbour check on your home and remove visible post.
  • Make sure that pets are properly cared for and are not left alone.
  • Cut grass before you leave and ask a neighbour to bring in your bins if necessary.

For those at home:

  • Be alert to alarm activations and take the time to investigate while maintaining your own safety and being conscious of your neighbour’s privacy.
  • Contact the nominated key holder (if known) or check with other neighbours.
  • Be alert for suspicious characters and bogus callers in the area.
  • If you do see something suspicious contact the Gardaí in Blanchardstown on 01 6667000 and inform your neighbourhood watch street coordinator.

Have a wonderful holiday.

Watch those Open Windows!

With the current humid weather many of us will have open windows front and back to get some air flowing through the house.

While this solves an air conditioning problem for us it also presents a world of opportunity for the burglar looking for easy access points to houses.

Bins in front of side gates also make for a convenient stepping stone to access back gardens (frequently guilty of this one myself).

Our tips for the day:

  • Make sure that you close all windows when leaving your house unattended.
  • Be careful leaving particularly downstairs windows open.
  • Avoid keeping bins in a place that they can be used to access your back garden
  • Do not engage with casual contractors that call to sell at your door
  • As always keep a look out for any suspicious characters in the neighbourhood.

If you see something suspicious please phone the Gardaí on 01 6667000.

    • Nature of the issues change throughout the year and over time.   Seems like burglars are able to know when house is empty even for a few minutes.    Gardaí have warned that they use flyer drops, tradesmen in the area and other tactics to have legitimised reasons to call to houses and test who is around.    Reminder not to engage with bogus traders.
    • Neighbourhood watch group to ask Gardaí for additional advice on this topic and share with scheme members.
    • Traffic turning right from Auburn Avenue to use the Pines as a route to avoid traffic
      • No right turn being ignored

Doing a job for your neighbour!

As the days get a little longer and brighter our thoughts may start coming around to getting the garden in shape, cleaning paths, gutters, pruning trees or rDoing a job for your neighbouremoving rubbish from the garden.

With that also comes the callers to our door of people who are conveniently ‘doing a job for one of our neighbours’ and would be willing to give us a good price.

We have had our first set of visits from such crews in the area this week.  While some of them may be genuine, this is also a very common ploy used by criminals to call to houses to get a feel for who is around, to get access to properties and to see whether there is something worth returning for at a later stage.

The advice from the Gardaí in these cases is not to engage with folks who call to your door unless they are personally known to you.     Even if they are working for one of your neighbours, do not assume that they are known to them personally either.

With some of these folks in the area I would remind people to be extra vigilant in the coming weeks and report any suspicious activity to the Gardaí in Blanchardstown on 01 6667000.

Even the burglars have given up on their new year resolutions

Aside some noisy weather related visitors named Desmond, Eva, Frank and Gertrude it has thankfully been a reasonably quiet Christmas and January.

Quiet is something that we are very happy to report on but it is important that we maintain our awareness of home security and any suspicious activities in the area.    We are still in the peak time for winter burglary and we remind you of the key tips from the Garda crime prevention unit: Vector illustration of cartoon thief

  • Secure all Doors and Windows
  • Light up your Home, use timer switches when out
  • Store Keys safely and away from windows & letterboxes
  • Record details of valuables and don’t keep large cash amounts at home
  • Use your Alarm, even when at home.

Christmas trees:

With the high winds over the period, the illegal dumping of trees on the green at Auburn Avenue did pose some danger to traffic.  Although Fingal collected trees frequently, the signage provided was probably too little too late and many people seemed willing to ignore.     While we want to be conscious of the use of Garda and other resources on priority issues we may look to communicate contact numbers for the reporting of such illegal dumping in advance of the Christmas season next year.    We will also look for the cooperation of other neighbourhood watch groups in the area to communicate with their residents.

General Election:

We wish all the candidates well during their campaign over the next three weeks.    It will certainly do no harm to look for inputs from candidates on their positions in relation to crime and security during the campaign to keep these issues top of mind.   Some of the issues that impact us directly are the availability of resources for the Gardaí locally and in particular a commitment to maintaining the support from the community Gardaí.

I expect we will see groups of canvassers in the area during the campaign.  It is probably better to resist the temptation to report them to the Gardaí as suspicious characters in the area but normal care and attention should be taken about allowing strangers into your homes.

Plans for 2016:

We will be due to have our annual meeting in late March / early April and at that time we will set out some of our plans for Neighbourhood Watch in 2016.     With your support we would like to add some signage in the area and we would also like to proceed with the Garda Text alert system.   That will require some modest funding from the community and we will present full details at that meeting.    We would also be interested in getting your inputs on how we can improve and if people are willing to get more involved.

We will set a date for this meeting in the coming weeks and get an agenda out to you in advance.

As always, if you see something suspicious in the area please contact the Gardaí in Blanchardstown on 01 6667000 and inform your neighbourhood watch street coordinator.

Wishing you a very happy and peaceful Christmas

We received great support during 2015 which has allowed us to become a more active group and we look forward to building on this into 2016.  Special thanks to our street coordinators, the Community Policing team in Blanchardstown and all those who got involved in helping organize the social outing and other events.

There are just a few updates and reminders for the time of year.santa_upside_down_chimney_400_clr_1553 (1)

Holiday travel:
Many people will travel over the Christmas time to visit relatives and friends.   As always when you plan to be away ask a trusted friend or neighbour to keep watch and make sure that your neighbours know who to contact in the case of an alarm activation.

Christmas tree recycling:
Fingal county council have advised that the green on Auburn Avenue is NO LONGER a drop off point for the recycling of Christmas trees.    The recycling centre for Castleknock and Blanchardstown is Millenium Park Car Park in Coolmine.  The dumping of trees on the Auburn Avenue site is illegal and presents a safety risk.    We have asked Fingal to put up a sign to this effect but we have not yet had this confirmed.

Bogus callers
This time of year generally sees a higher level of charity callers and collections.  Gardai have advised that this time of year also sees a higher level of bogus callers and collections. While we do not want to discourage charitable acts, we would advise against engaging with strangers calling to your door for collections or as tradespeople.

Winter Security Info-graphic:
The Gardai produced a very good info-graphic for Winter security which is available on our site here.  There was no mention of seasonal entry via the chimney so we should be in good shape for a certain welcome visitor on night of Christmas eve.   No doubt our younger Neighbourhood Watchers will be keeping watch on the evening of the 24th

Have a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas.
